New to the Dubai Metro? Five things to know first

  1. Buy a Nol card before the gate. A Silver Nol card costs AED 25, of which AED 19 is travel credit, and every station sells one from its ticket machines and office. Trips cost AED 3 to AED 7.50 depending on how many fare zones you cross; on a busy day, a AED 20 one-day pass can work out cheaper. Which card to buy.
  2. Tap in and tap out. The fare is worked out from both taps. Forget the second one and the system deducts the maximum fare for an incomplete journey.
  3. Check the cabin before you sit. The front carriage is Gold Class, which needs a Gold ticket, and part of the train is reserved for women and children. Sitting in either without the right ticket or eligibility is a fine. Cabin rules.
  4. No eating or drinking — not even water. It is enforced, and the fine starts at AED 100. The full list of offences and amounts is on our rules and fines page.
  5. Sunday starts late. Trains run from 5:00 AM most days but not until 8:00 AM on Sunday — the detail that catches out early flights and first-day visitors. Full timetable.

The Dubai Metro in numbers

The metro opened in September 2009 and today runs 2 driverless lines — the Red Line (35 stations, 67.1 km) and the Green Line (20 stations, 22.5 km), meeting at Union and BurJuman. It has carried more than 2.8 billion passengers since opening, including 295 million in 2025, up 7% on the year, and handles around 1 million riders a day — about 40% of all public transport use in Dubai, according to the Dubai Media Office.

Two more lines are coming. The Blue Line (14 stations, 30 km) is under construction and scheduled to open on 9 September 2029, and the fully underground Gold Line (18 stations, 42 km) is due on 9 September 2032. Our trackers separate what the RTA has confirmed from what has only been reported.

Every timetable, fare and station name on the site comes from a single verified dataset, checked against the RTA and the Dubai Media Office and re-verified whenever the RTA announces a change — the current data was last checked in September 2026. When a station is renamed, the new name appears across every page, map and route guide at once, and old names keep working as redirects.
