Metro or taxi from the airport, the Mall or the Marina? The honest answer is usually both have a place – but for predictable Dubai trips the metro wins on price, time in rush hour and stress. Here is the math and the exceptions.

When the metro wins

  • Airport to Downtown – Red Line direct to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall: about 25 minutes, AED 5 Silver Nol. A taxi from T3 lands AED 60-90 depending on traffic and time of day.
  • Rush hour (7-9 AM, 5:30-7:30 PM) – Sheikh Zayed Road and Deira crawl; the metro runs every 2-4 minutes on its own right-of-way.
  • Marina and JBR – Red Line to Sobha Realty or DMCC, then tram (one Nol tap within 30 minutes). Taxi from Downtown in peak can exceed 45 minutes; metro+tram is often 35.
  • Daily commuting – the AED 14 daily cap means three+ trips/day beats taxis by a wide margin. Monthly pass math on the Nol passes guide.

When a taxi wins

  • Terminal 2 – no metro station. Green Line from DAFZ is a 15-minute walk; many T2 arrivals take a short taxi to Union or Baniyas instead.
  • Late night after last train – network closes midnight (1 AM Fri). After that, Careem/Uber or street taxi only.
  • Door-to-door with heavy luggage – two pieces are allowed on metro but awkward on the airport-Downtown bridge at peak. Family with four suitcases: taxi.
  • Off-peak cross-town without a direct line – JGE to Al Nahda requires two changes; a taxi can be faster off-peak even at higher cost.
  • Global Village, desert camps, Abu Dhabi – no metro serves these; taxi or RTA bus from a metro hub.

The hybrid pattern locals use

Metro to the nearest hub, taxi for the last 2 km – common for Global Village season (metro to Mall of the Emirates, taxi from there) and for addresses more than 800 m from any station. Still cheaper than taxi all the way if the metro leg crosses zones you would pay for anyway.
