Gold Souq station (G22) is named for exactly what it serves: the largest gold market in the world, a signed few minutes’ walk from the exits. Underground on the Green Line’s Deira stretch, fare zone 5, with a major bus station alongside – and a former name, Palm Deira, that still confuses older maps.

Station to souq

Follow the Gold Souq signage from the gates; the market’s wooden-latticed main arcade begins about five minutes on foot through Deira’s commercial lanes. The classic circuit chains three souqs and two stations: gold here, then walk on to the Spice and Perfume souqs near Al Ras (one stop, or ten minutes on foot), finishing at the creek for the AED 1 abra crossing. Do it in this order – Gold Souq’s arcade is covered, the walk to Al Ras is the exposed stretch, and the abra is your reward.

Buying gold like you mean it

Prices track the live gold rate – posted in every window – plus a negotiable making charge. That structure means haggling is expected on the making charge, never on the metal. Mornings (10 AM-noon) are the calm window; evenings after 7 PM are the spectacle, when the arcade lights up and tour groups arrive. The surrounding streets hold the wholesale district – wander one block off the arcade and the same chains cost noticeably less.

Prices track the live gold rate posted in every window, plus a negotiable making charge – so haggling is expected on the making charge, never on the metal, and purity is regulated hard by Dubai Municipality, meaning the hallmark means what it says. Mornings from 10 to noon are the calm window; evenings after seven are the lit-up spectacle when the arcade glows and the tour groups arrive. The station opened in 2011 as Palm Deira, named for the offshore island project once planned nearby; when that became Dubai Islands, the RTA renamed the stop in 2020 after the market that was always its real anchor, so old maps saying Palm Deira mean here.

Why your old map says Palm Deira

The station opened in 2011 as Palm Deira, named for the offshore palm-island project planned nearby. When that project was reshaped into Dubai Islands, the RTA renamed the station (November 2020) after the market that was always its real anchor. Eleven years of maps, guidebooks and blog posts still point to “Palm Deira” – same station, better name.

Local tips

  • The bus station next door is one of Deira’s main hubs – handy for onward hops the metro doesn’t cover, like the Waterfront Market (or take a 7-minute taxi).
  • Friday timing: the souq’s evening peak meets the metro’s 1 AM close comfortably, but shops shutter through Friday midday prayers – plan around early afternoon.
  • Zone 5 all the way: the airport, Al Rigga’s hotels and Union are all 1-zone AED 3 rides from here.
  • Photography etiquette: window displays yes, staff and customers ask-first – the dealers are friendly about it if you are.

Getting here and onward

Gold Souq is underground on the Green Line’s Deira arc, zone 5, one stop from Al Ras and two from Union’s Red Line interchange, so the whole old-city circuit rides for AED 3. The adjacent Gold Souq Bus Station is one of Deira’s main hubs, handy for onward hops the metro does not cover such as the Waterfront Market, and the Deira Corniche waterfront is a short walk. Change at Union for the airport and the Red Line.
