Sharaf DG station (G25) is the doorstep of Dubai’s most atmospheric quarter: Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood’s wind-tower lanes, the Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort, and the Textile Souq all sit within minutes of the exits. Underground on the Green Line in Bur Dubai, fare zone 6 – and the current holder of the most misdirecting station name on the network.

First, the name problem

There have been two Sharaf DG stations. From 2010 to 2020 the name belonged to a Red Line station out by Al Barsha (now InsuranceMarket.ae). Since November 2020 it belongs here – the station that opened as Al Fahidi in 2011. Any pre-2020 guide, blog or saved pin that says “Sharaf DG” means Al Barsha, 20 km away. Rule of thumb: heritage quarter = Green Line Sharaf DG; anything near Mall of the Emirates in old directions = the other one.

There have been two Sharaf DG stations, and this is the confusion that generates more wrong directions than anything else on the network. If someone’s directions mix Sharaf DG with MOE, translate to InsuranceMarket.ae and carry on.

The heritage circuit from the exits

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (the district many still call Bastakiya) begins a few minutes’ walk toward the creek: coral-stone houses, wind towers, the XVA and Majlis galleries, the Coffee Museum and the Arabian Tea House’s courtyard. The Dubai Museum occupies the 1787 Al Fahidi Fort at the district’s edge, and the Textile Souq’s covered arcade runs from there toward the abra dock – where AED 1 crosses you to the Deira spice side. It is the best two-hour walk in Dubai, and it starts at this station.

Meena Bazaar and the tailors

Inland from the fort spreads Meena Bazaar – the fabric, tailoring and jewellery district that dresses half the city for weddings. Same-week tailoring is the draw; bring a photo of what you want and expect a fitting within days. Prices are honest by default here in a way the tourist arcades aren’t.

Local tips

  • Timing the quarter: Al Fahidi’s lanes are unshaded – mornings or the last two hours before sunset in warm months, any time December-February.
  • To Downtown: one stop to BurJuman, change to the Red Line – about 15 minutes total to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall.
  • The abra day-plan: museum → textile souq → abra → spice souq → gold souq → Green Line home from Gold Souq station. One AED 3 fare each way plus AED 1 on the water.
  • Friday note: the museum and lanes are quiet mornings; the souqs wake mid-afternoon.

Getting here and onward

Sharaf DG is underground on the Green Line in Bur Dubai, one stop from BurJuman’s Red Line interchange, so Downtown is about fifteen minutes total and the Gold Souq side lies the other direction via Al Ghubaiba. It is zone 6. The classic day-plan chains it all: museum, textile souq, abra across the creek, spice souq, gold souq, then the Green Line home from Gold Souq station – one AED 3 fare each way plus a dirham on the water.
